Secret Service Officer Arrested for Indecent Exposure After Trump Golf Event

CNBC reported Monday that a U.S. Secret Service officer was arrested in Miami on an indecent exposure charge following a presidential security assignment. The officer, John Spillman, 33, had spent Sunday providing exterior perimeter screening at a PGA Tour event hosted at Trump National Doral. The Secret Service confirmed he has since been placed on administrative leave.

Arrest at a Miami Airport Hotel

Spillman’s arrest took place at the DoubleTree by Hilton Miami Airport and Convention Center late Sunday night. Hotel guests told investigators they encountered Spillman in the lobby near midnight. They later reported witnessing him committing an indecent act in a hallway near their room. Security staff subsequently located Spillman on the sixth floor in a compromising state, according to local station WSVN-7, which cited the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office arrest report. Online jail records showed Spillman was held at the Miami-Dade County Jail on a $1,000 bond.

The Security Detail He Was Part Of

Earlier that same Sunday, President Donald Trump attended the final round of the Cadillac Championship at his Doral resort. Trump watched play from a covered area near the 18th hole. Spillman was among the personnel tasked with screening attendees on the event’s exterior perimeter. He was off-duty at the time of the alleged incident.

Agency Leadership Responds

Richard Macauley, chief of the U.S. Secret Service Police, issued a statement saying the agency was fully aware of the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office arrest. Macauley said the alleged conduct was unacceptable and directly contradicted the standards of professionalism his agency demands. He added that a complete internal investigation was underway alongside the criminal proceedings. The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office had not responded to requests for comment at the time of publication.

Background: A Difficult Recent Period for the Secret Service

Spillman’s arrest arrives less than two weeks after a separate and more violent incident involving Secret Service personnel. Officers arrested a California man, Cole Tomas Allen, who allegedly fired a weapon at an agent while breaching a security checkpoint at the Washington Hilton Hotel. Trump was attending the White House Correspondents’ dinner one floor above at the time. The agent was not seriously injured, as body armor stopped the round. Allen faces charges of attempting to assassinate the president. The two incidents, while entirely different in nature, add to scrutiny of the agency’s personnel and conduct standards during a period of heightened security demands.
