Jeffrey Epstein’s Purported Suicide Note Made Public by Federal Judge

A federal judge has unsealed a document purported to be an Epstein suicide note, CNN reported Wednesday. The handwritten, unsigned, and undated note emerged through the court docket of a former cellmate of the late convicted sex offender.

What the Purported Note Says

The document, which remains unverified, contains fragmented and emotionally charged language. Passages from the note suggest Epstein felt vindicated by a prior investigation. One line reads that he viewed it as a privilege to choose the timing of his departure. The note also conveys a bleak sense of resignation about his circumstances.

District Judge Kenneth Karas of the Southern District of New York oversaw the release. The former cellmate, whose own criminal case prompted the filing, claimed he had personally discovered the handwritten message.

Background on the Epstein Case

Jeffrey Epstein, the financier and convicted sex offender, was found dead in his Manhattan federal detention cell in August 2019. He had been awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges at the time. A medical examiner ruled his death a suicide. His passing ignited years of public controversy and conspiracy theories about the circumstances of his death.

The note, according to CNN, is believed by his former cellmate to be connected to a failed suicide attempt Epstein made in July 2019. That incident occurred roughly a month before his death.

How the Document Came to Light

The existence of the purported note had been concealed from public view for nearly seven years. The New York Times first reported its existence last week and subsequently petitioned Judge Karas to unseal the record. The Justice Department did not oppose the transparency request.

In its filing to the court, the department acknowledged broad public interest in Epstein’s death but stated it had no independent knowledge of whether the note was authentic. Officials deferred entirely to the court’s judgment on disclosure.

Justice Department’s Broader Epstein Disclosure Effort

The unsealing follows a separate Justice Department initiative to release millions of records from its holdings related to Epstein. That broader document release has amplified scrutiny of the case and those connected to it. Lawmakers and advocacy groups have pressed for full transparency around Epstein’s network, his death, and the government’s prior handling of his prosecution.

The note’s release adds another layer to an already deeply contested public record surrounding one of the most consequential criminal cases in recent American history.
