China Orders 200 Boeing Jets in Trump-Xi Trade Deal
CNBC reported Thursday that President Donald Trump told Fox News China has agreed to purchase 200 Boeing aircraft. Trump attributed the commitment directly to Chinese President Xi Jinping during a clip that aired the same day. The Boeing China order marks a significant moment in the ongoing trade negotiations between Washington and Beijing.
Trump Announces the Deal on Fox News
Speaking to Fox News, Trump said Xi had agreed to buy 200 large Boeing jets. He framed the purchase as a key deliverable from their latest talks. Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg and several other senior American executives accompanied Trump on the trip to China. Boeing and the White House had not issued formal statements by the time CNBC published its report.

Analysts Had Expected Far More
Wall Street had been anticipating a larger commitment from Beijing. Jefferies estimated the order could reach as many as 500 aircraft. Analysts widely expected the deal to centre heavily on Boeing’s bestselling 737 Max narrowbody jets. The 200-plane figure therefore disappointed some observers, even as it represents a meaningful commercial win. Boeing shares fell nearly 4% in afternoon trading on Thursday.
A Decade Without a Major Chinese Order
Boeing has not secured a significant order from China in nearly ten years. During that same period, Chinese carriers shifted purchasing activity toward Airbus, Boeing’s primary global rival. The drought made any resumption of Chinese business a closely watched milestone for the manufacturer. Ortberg flagged the summit as a potential turning point during Boeing’s most recent earnings call, calling it a “meaningful opportunity” that could include an aircraft order. He declined at the time to specify a number, saying only that it would be significant.
What Comes Next for Boeing
The announcement arrives as Boeing continues its operational recovery following years of safety scrutiny and production setbacks. A confirmed order of this scale would provide a meaningful demand signal and support the company’s production planning. Trump did not specify the model breakdown of the 200 jets. Analysts will now watch for a formal order announcement and contract details from both governments.
