Blue Origin Rocket Explosion at Cape Canaveral

A rocket belonging to Jeff Bezos‘s space venture Blue Origin exploded on its Cape Canaveral launch pad late Wednesday during a ground test, the BBC reported. Dramatic footage circulated online showing a massive fireball consuming the immediate area around the pad. Blue Origin confirmed the incident, describing it as an “anomaly” during a hotfire test. The company said all personnel on site had been accounted for.

The blast occurred at approximately 9 pm local time at the Florida facility. Brevard County Emergency Management confirmed there was no threat to the surrounding public. The Federal Aviation Administration acknowledged the event but noted the test fell outside the scope of any FAA-licensed activity. The agency confirmed no disruption to air traffic resulted from the incident. NASA and the US Space Force had not commented at the time of reporting.

A Difficult Recent Stretch for Blue Origin

The explosion arrives during a particularly turbulent period for the company. Just weeks earlier, the FAA had grounded Blue Origin’s New Glenn rocket following a separate mishap. That incident involved an attempt to place a satellite for AST SpaceMobile into orbit. The rocket failed to deliver the payload to its intended altitude. That setback came despite a milestone success last November, when Blue Origin launched New Glenn from Florida and successfully recovered its reusable booster for the first time. Wednesday’s explosion adds new pressure ahead of a planned mission to deploy internet satellites for Amazon, which had been scheduled for the coming days.

What Comes Next for the Bezos Space Venture

Blue Origin was founded in 2000 and sits at the center of Bezos’s ambitions in commercial space. The company competes directly with Elon Musk‘s SpaceX, which recently conducted a high-profile Starship test flight. Wednesday’s explosion will almost certainly trigger a review by federal authorities before any further test or launch activity resumes. The scope and timeline of that review remains unclear. Whether the planned Amazon satellite launch can proceed on schedule is now an open question for the company and its customers.
