Trump Eyes Rally Replacement as Freedom 250 Concert Lineup Collapses
CNBC reported Saturday that President Donald Trump is weighing the cancellation of a planned National Mall concert series tied to America’s 250th anniversary celebrations, after five performers withdrew from the lineup in rapid succession.
Freedom 250 Concerts Face a Mounting Lineup Crisis
The Freedom 250 concerts were designed as a centrepiece of the Great American State Fair. That 16-day event runs from June 25 to July 10. It spans the National Mall from the Capitol to the Washington Monument, featuring state pavilions, fairground rides, exhibits, and multiple concert stages.
But the musical programme has unravelled quickly. On Friday, Bret Michaels, frontman of rock band Poison, became the fifth artist to withdraw. Michaels cited concerns that the event had drifted from the nonpartisan celebration he originally agreed to join. Organisers have not publicly explained the other departures.
Trump Argues He Is the Bigger Draw
Responding on Truth Social, Trump floated scrapping the performances entirely. He suggested replacing them with a speech or political rally, arguing his own drawing power eclipses that of any musician. He wrote on Truth Social that he draws “much larger audiences than Elvis in his prime” and does so “without a guitar.” He directed advisers to examine the feasibility of staging an “AMERICA IS BACK Rally” on the Mall instead.
What Freedom 250 Was Supposed to Be
Freedom 250 is a White House-created public-private partnership. It was set up to coordinate federal agencies and private sponsors around the nation’s semiquincentennial. The broader fair concept promised a sprawling civic celebration rather than a partisan gathering. That nonpartisan framing appears to be precisely what several departing artists say they can no longer vouch for.
What Happens Next Remains Unclear
It is not yet known whether organisers will seek replacement performers to salvage the concert format. Nor is it confirmed that Trump’s rally proposal carries serious institutional backing within the Freedom 250 organisation. The departures have nonetheless raised pointed questions about whether the event can proceed as originally envisioned. With less than four weeks until the fair’s opening date, organisers face narrowing options and growing public scrutiny over the celebration’s direction.
