Universal UK Resort Named, Backed by £1.3bn Government Pledge
BBC Business reported Wednesday that the new Universal United Kingdom Resort has been formally named, with the UK government committing £1.3bn toward the surrounding infrastructure needed to support it.
Comcast NBCUniversal is behind the venture. The company plans to spend £5bn constructing the resort on a 268-hectare site in Kempston Hardwick, Bedfordshire. A further £1bn in investment is earmarked across the first decade of operation.
A Landmark Deal for UK Tourism
Chancellor Rachel Reeves toured the Bedfordshire site ahead of the formal announcement. She said the project would unlock close to £50bn in economic activity and generate thousands of jobs across the region.
The government’s £1.3bn contribution is directed at public infrastructure upgrades. That includes a major expansion of Wixams station on the Thameslink line, which would gain two additional platforms. Improvements to the A421 road corridor are also included, with those two items alone estimated to cost £474m.
A separate East West Rail station at Stewartby is anticipated to open in the early 2030s, providing another connection point for visitors.
How Universal Got Here
Universal Destinations and Experiences has long identified the Kempston Hardwick site as its preferred UK location. The company has since acquired additional land nearby, signalling ambitions that extend well beyond the initial build. Company executives have described a plan spanning roughly a century of phased development.
The park would be the only Universal-branded resort in Europe. Mark Woodbury, chairman and chief executive of Universal Destinations and Experiences, said the project would generate opportunities for Bedford and the wider region while bringing guests from around the world to a single destination.
Jobs and Visitor Projections
More than 100 staff are already employed on the project in the UK. Universal expects the construction phase to support up to 20,000 jobs. Upon opening, the resort would add roughly 8,000 permanent roles, with around 80% of those positions expected to be filled by residents of Bedfordshire and neighbouring counties.
The attraction is projected to draw 8.5 million visitors annually when it opens in 2031. Within two decades, Universal hopes to reach 12 million annual visitors, which would place it among the most-attended parks on earth. No confirmed ride lineup has been announced, though a spokesperson said the resort would feature immersive storytelling and high-capacity attractions. The park will also include a free-access retail and entertainment district alongside the main ticketed areas.
