American Airlines Chooses Starlink for In-Flight Wi-Fi on 500-Plus Narrow-Body Jets
CNBC reported Tuesday that American Airlines will equip more than 500 narrow-body aircraft with SpaceX’s Starlink service, extending the satellite internet provider’s grip on the U.S. airline industry.
American Airlines Commits to Starlink Rollout
American Airlines confirmed it will install Starlink across roughly 500 Airbus narrow-body jets, including the fuel-efficient A321neo. Installation is expected to begin early next year. An airline spokesperson noted there are no immediate plans to swap out existing providers on the carrier’s Boeing fleet. Those aircraft currently run a mix of Viasat and Panasonic connectivity hardware.
The decision ends a competitive evaluation process. As recently as March, the airline had been weighing both Starlink and Amazon’s Leo satellite network as potential vendors.
A Competitive Race for Passenger Loyalty
Airlines are investing heavily in cabin upgrades as they fight for high-spending travelers. Faster, more reliable in-flight internet has become a key battleground. American launched free Wi-Fi for its frequent flyer members in January, following similar moves by United Airlines and Delta Air Lines.
Delta, however, broke in a different direction. The carrier announced in March it would adopt Amazon’s Leo network for hundreds of jets starting in 2028. That leaves the major U.S. carriers split between two satellite camps.
Background: Starlink’s Airline Momentum
SpaceX’s connectivity arm has been signing airline deals at pace for several years. United Airlines moved early, selecting Starlink for its mainline fleet. Southwest Airlines and Alaska Airlines, which completed its merger with Hawaiian Airlines in 2024, have also committed to the service.
The pattern reflects a broader shift in aviation. Legacy in-flight internet was widely criticised for sluggish speeds and high per-session costs. Satellite-based low-earth-orbit services promise a step change in bandwidth and reliability.
SpaceX’s connectivity division, which houses Starlink, generated $11.39 billion in revenue last year. That figure represented 61% of total company sales, according to a prospectus filed ahead of a widely anticipated IPO. SpaceX is preparing to go public next month in what analysts expect could rank among the largest listings on record.
American’s Starlink deal arrives as the carrier works to rebuild its premium reputation after a turbulent stretch. Upgraded connectivity, paired with free access for loyalty members, forms part of a broader effort to close the gap with rivals on the customer experience front.
