Anthropic Signs $1.8B Cloud Deal With Akamai to Power Claude Expansion
Anthropic has signed a seven-year, $1.8 billion cloud infrastructure agreement with Akamai Technologies, Benzinga reported Saturday, citing a Bloomberg account of the arrangement. The Anthropic Akamai cloud deal is aimed at expanding compute resources behind the company’s Claude AI platform as demand accelerates sharply.
A Deal Hidden in Plain Sight
Akamai had already hinted at the partnership without naming its counterpart. When the company published its first-quarter earnings on Thursday, executives described a major new agreement with a “leading frontier model provider.” The identity of that provider remained undisclosed until Bloomberg’s reporting connected the dots.
The revelation sent Akamai shares surging roughly 27% during the regular session, closing near $147.71. In extended trading, gains stretched further, with the stock up nearly 30% at one point. Akamai carries a market capitalisation of approximately $21.75 billion and has now gained more than 73% year to date.
Claude Usage Driving Urgent Compute Needs
At Anthropic’s “Code with Claude” developer conference in San Francisco, CEO Dario Amodei described explosive growth in the platform’s annualised revenue and usage, citing an increase of roughly 80 times. He attributed the surge primarily to developers deploying Claude for coding tasks and enterprise workflow automation. That pace of adoption has created acute pressure on the company’s underlying infrastructure, making expanded cloud capacity a near-term operational priority.
Akamai’s Quarter Already Beat Expectations
The earnings context matters here. Akamai reported first-quarter revenue of roughly $1.07 billion for the period ending March 31, edging ahead of analyst forecasts. Earnings per share came in at $1.61, beating consensus estimates by close to 9%. The cybersecurity and cloud delivery company has been repositioning its business toward higher-growth cloud and AI workloads, and Thursday’s results indicated early traction on that pivot even before the Anthropic news broke publicly.
Background: AI Firms Race to Lock In Compute
The Anthropic arrangement is the latest in a series of large, long-duration compute commitments made by AI developers. Rivals including OpenAI and Google DeepMind have each moved to secure dedicated infrastructure capacity through multiyear partnerships with cloud providers. Analysts have noted that frontier model developers face a structural bottleneck between the pace of model development and the availability of specialised compute. Locking in guaranteed cloud capacity through contracts of this scale has become a routine part of competitive strategy in the sector.
Akamai’s shift from a content delivery network focused on web performance toward full-scale cloud computing has been gradual. A landmark deal of this size validates that repositioning in a meaningful way.
