Anthropic in Talks to Lease SpaceX Colossus Data Center Capacity

Yahoo Finance reported Wednesday that AI startup Anthropic is set to lease the entire available computing capacity at SpaceX’s Colossus data center. The deal underscores the intensifying scramble for AI infrastructure among frontier model developers.

Anthropic Locks In Colossus Capacity

Anthropic, the company behind the Claude family of AI models, is moving to secure dedicated compute at Colossus. The facility is one of the most powerful AI training clusters currently in operation. Renting the full capacity signals that Anthropic’s demand for processing power is outpacing what existing cloud arrangements can reliably supply.

The startup has been growing at a rapid pace. Its latest Claude models have drawn strong enterprise adoption, putting sustained pressure on its infrastructure pipeline. Securing a dedicated facility rather than relying solely on shared cloud providers gives Anthropic more predictable access to the GPU clusters needed for both training and inference.

Colossus Background

Colossus was built by xAI, Elon Musk’s AI venture, in Memphis, Tennessee, and came online in late 2024. The facility drew attention for the speed of its construction and its dense concentration of Nvidia GPUs. SpaceX holds a stake in the infrastructure surrounding the project. Colossus was initially built to train xAI’s Grok models, making its reported availability to Anthropic a notable commercial development.

The willingness to rent capacity to a competitor reflects the enormous capital costs involved in building and maintaining frontier AI infrastructure. Owners of such facilities increasingly look to lease unused cycles to offset costs.
