BYD Great Tang Launch Delayed as Pre-Orders Surge Past 100,000 Units

Benzinga reported Wednesday that the official launch of the BYD Great Tang has been postponed to June 8. Unexpectedly strong pre-sale demand and manufacturing bottlenecks forced the company’s hand. The three-row electric SUV was originally scheduled to debut last month.

Orders Pile Up After Beijing Debut

BYD opened Great Tang pre-orders at the Beijing Auto Show in April. The vehicle collected more than 30,000 reservations in its first 24 hours on the market. Within two weeks, that figure had surpassed 100,000 units, according to the report. BYD CEO Wang Chuanfu recently acknowledged that demand for vehicles equipped with the new battery technology is outpacing what factories can currently produce.

Fast-Charging Tech Drives the Frenzy

The primary draw is BYD’s Blade Battery 2.0 and its accompanying Flash Charging system, unveiled at a company technology event in March. The system allows a charge from 10% to 70% in roughly five minutes. A near-full charge from 10% to 97% takes nine minutes. Even in temperatures as low as negative 30 degrees Celsius, total charging time increases by only about three minutes versus room temperature. The vehicle’s certified range under China’s CLTC testing standard exceeds 621 miles.

Those figures compare sharply with current industry norms. Standard EVs average roughly 300 miles of range, according to the US Department of Transportation, with public fast-charger sessions typically running 20 to 60 minutes.

Background: Solving the Range Anxiety Problem

Concerns over battery life, slow winter charging, and long holiday queues at stations have long dampened EV adoption in China. BYD has openly identified those friction points as central to its product strategy. The Great Tang is designed to answer all three objections in one package. The automaker is simultaneously constructing a nationwide fast-charging network to support the technology. More than 5,700 compatible stations are already operational. BYD targets 20,000 installations by year-end.

Pricing and International Ambitions

The Great Tang starts below $37,000 in China. Customers who preorder also receive 18 months of free charging. BYD has signalled plans to bring both the battery platform and fast-charging infrastructure to the UK and broader European markets later in 2026. Whether Western production and regulatory timelines can match the pace of Chinese consumer appetite remains an open question.
