Cruise Ship Hantavirus Outbreak Triggers Global Evacuation From Tenerife
CNBC reported Sunday that government evacuation flights began departing Tenerife after a hantavirus outbreak aboard the luxury cruise ship MV Hondius left three people dead and eight ill.
Passengers Flown Home Under Strict Protocols
Spanish and French repatriation aircraft touched down in Madrid and Paris on Sunday afternoon. Passengers were transferred directly to hospitals. French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu disclosed via social media that one French passenger showed symptoms during the flight home. Flights for travelers from Canada, the Netherlands, Turkey, the United Kingdom, Ireland, and the United States were scheduled to depart by Sunday evening. Remaining flights were expected to complete by Monday at 1900 local time. Upon landing, passengers face testing and either hospital admission, quarantine facilities, or supervised home isolation depending on national policy.
WHO Calls for 42-Day Isolation Window
The World Health Organization recommended a 42-day quarantine period for all passengers, citing the virus’s incubation period of up to six weeks. Maria Van Kerkhove, the WHO’s director of epidemic and pandemic management, said daily health monitoring was essential whether at home or in a dedicated facility. Spain committed to keeping its nationals hospitalized for the full 42 days. France opted for 72 hours of inpatient care followed by home self-isolation for 45 additional days. Countries were given latitude to design their own frameworks within WHO guidance.
Background: How the Outbreak Unfolded
The first confirmed case surfaced on May 2 in Johannesburg, where a British man was admitted to intensive care. Health officials later determined he had fallen ill 21 days after a fellow passenger died. That earlier death may have originated before boarding, possibly during travel through Argentina and Chile. Three people have since died — a Dutch couple and a German national. Four others remain hospitalized across South Africa, the Netherlands, and Switzerland. A suspected case on the remote British overseas territory of Tristan da Cunha is being treated by a UK military medical team parachuted onto the island.
Officials Move to Calm Public Fears
Acting U.S. CDC Director Jay Bhattacharya was direct in distancing this outbreak from pandemic comparisons, telling CNN that the virus posed a far smaller contagion risk than Covid-19. The roughly 17 American passengers were offered a choice between home isolation and a facility in Nebraska. Spain’s health ministry echoed the measured tone, confirming no rodents had been found aboard the vessel. Hantavirus is primarily spread through rodent contact and only rarely passes between people through close contact. Thirty crew members remained aboard the MV Hondius, set to sail to the Netherlands on Monday evening.
