Crypto Yield Strategies Move to Center as Flat Prices Compress Returns

CoinDesk index strategist Maxime Seiler said on May 6 that subdued cryptocurrency price action is masking genuine adoption, and that yield-generation strategies have become the dominant trade for institutional and sophisticated retail investors. Seiler’s assessment, published in the weekly Crypto Long & Short newsletter, covers a range of yield sources with annual returns spanning from 3% on stablecoin positions to as high as 18% through restaking protocols.

What the Strategist Said

Seiler said the current environment rewards investors who generate income from crypto holdings rather than betting on price appreciation.

The newsletter outlines several yield tiers. Stablecoin farming on Aave and Curve offers 3% to 5% annually.

Liquidity provision on Uniswap v4 using its new hooks architecture can produce 8% to 25% depending on pool selection and fee configuration. Restaking, a mechanism where staked assets are reused as collateral in additional security layers, reaches up to 18% annually.

Stablecoin farming involves depositing a stablecoin, a cryptocurrency designed to maintain a fixed value against the U.S. dollar, into lending or liquidity protocols in exchange for interest.

Restaking extends this further by pledging already-staked assets to secure additional protocols simultaneously.

Background

Bitcoin (BTC) held near $81,700 on May 6 after a period of range-bound trading above $82,000 that followed a dollar-weakness rally in late April. Altcoin markets have stalled broadly, with most major tokens trading flat or slightly lower over the past two weeks.

Spot Ethereum (ETH) ETF inflows have stayed positive but have not produced a breakout move. In that context, yield becomes a way to generate returns without requiring price appreciation.

What to Watch

The risks Seiler flagged include impermanent loss on liquidity positions, oracle failures that can distort pricing, and stablecoin depegging events.

Each yield tier carries a different risk profile, and the 18% restaking figure assumes no slashing event, a penalty mechanism that destroys a portion of staked assets when validators misbehave. Investors rotating into yield strategies will need to track protocol governance changes that can alter fee structures on short notice.
