DNC Autopsy Blames Biden White House for Harris Election Defeat
The Democratic National Committee’s long-awaited internal review has placed significant blame on the Biden White House for Kamala Harris’s 2024 presidential election loss, CNN reported Thursday.
The document, compiled by Democratic consultant Paul Rivera as a part-time volunteer, concludes that the party failed to adequately position Harris for success. It also argues that attacks on Donald Trump during the campaign were largely ineffective.
Party Infighting Delayed the Report’s Release
DNC Chairman Ken Martin had initially refused to publish the review at all, citing concerns about its readiness and factual accuracy. He later reversed that decision following a wave of internal criticism from party members demanding transparency.
Martin acknowledged he had inadvertently created a distraction by withholding the document. He said he chose to release it in full and without edits, even though it does not meet his own standards for quality. A disclaimer attached to the report clarifies that its findings represent Rivera’s personal views and not the official position of the DNC. Rivera declined to comment following publication.
Following CNN’s reporting on the document, Martin informed DNC staff that Rivera was no longer associated with the committee.
What the Report Actually Says
The review urges Democrats to step back from identity-focused political messaging. It calls on the party to redirect resources earlier in election cycles to rebuild connections with voters who drifted away.
The report does not lay out a clear forward strategy. Instead it offers a fragmented series of analytical observations. It acknowledges that recent national elections were decided by narrow margins, but warns against interpreting that closeness as a reason to avoid deep structural reform.
Background: Democrats Have Struggled to Diagnose 2024
Since Trump’s return to the White House, the Democratic Party has been engaged in an extended and sometimes bitter debate about what went wrong. Harris entered the race late following President Joe Biden’s decision to step aside, leaving limited time to build campaign infrastructure or define a distinct platform.
The decision to delay and then suppress the autopsy report only added to a sense of institutional dysfunction. Several senior Democrats had publicly demanded its release for months before Martin finally relented.
The document, even in its incomplete state, represents the most formal acknowledgment yet from within the party that its leadership structure contributed directly to the 2024 defeat.
