Frontier Airlines Jet Kills Pedestrian on Denver Runway After Engine Fire Forces Abort
A Frontier Airlines passenger jet struck and killed an unidentified person on a runway at Denver International Airport late Friday, CNBC reported, in an incident that triggered an engine fire and forced the emergency evacuation of more than 230 people.
The Frontier Airlines runway pedestrian fatality occurred as the carrier’s Airbus A321 was beginning its takeoff roll toward Los Angeles.
What Happened on the Denver Runway
Airport officials said the individual had scaled the perimeter fence surrounding the airfield and was struck by the aircraft roughly two minutes after breaching the boundary. The collision sparked a fire in one engine and sent smoke into the cabin. Pilots immediately aborted the departure.
The aircraft was carrying 224 passengers and seven crew members. All 231 people on board were evacuated safely, though 12 reported minor injuries. Five of those individuals were taken to nearby hospitals for further evaluation.
The Investigation Begins
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed that local law enforcement had taken the lead on the inquiry, with support from the Federal Aviation Administration and the Transportation Security Administration. Frontier said it was cooperating fully with airport authorities and safety regulators as it gathered additional information.
Denver International Airport authorities noted in a post on X that the deceased had not been identified and was not believed to be an airport employee.
Background on Airport Perimeter Security
Breaches of airport perimeter fencing are relatively rare but not unprecedented at major US airports. The FAA requires airports to maintain secure boundary fencing under federal regulations, and any breach triggers mandatory inspections of the affected fence line. Denver airport officials said they examined the crossed section of fence after the incident and found it structurally intact, suggesting the individual deliberately climbed rather than exploited a gap.
The runway involved was closed following the incident. Airport officials expected to reopen it within a few hours, limiting disruption to broader flight operations at one of the busiest hubs in the United States.
What Comes Next for Frontier
Frontier Airlines faces scrutiny over the sequence of events, though initial evidence points to an unauthorized entry rather than any operational failure by the carrier or airport. The identity of the deceased remained unknown as of Friday evening, and authorities had not confirmed a motive for the fence breach.
The FAA is expected to issue a formal preliminary report in the days ahead.
