Interactive Brokers Expands Cryptocurrency Futures Lineup Through Coinbase Derivatives Partnership

Interactive Brokers (IBKR) has expanded its cryptocurrency futures product lineup through a partnership with Coinbase Derivatives, making new contracts available to clients on the IBKR trading platform. The announcement covers futures products listed by Coinbase Derivatives, LLC, the regulated futures exchange operated by Coinbase.

The move adds to an existing relationship between the two firms.

The Partnership Details

A Business Wire announcement dated May 6 outlined the expansion. Interactive Brokers said the new cryptocurrency futures products are available through its standard platform interface without requiring separate account credentials.

Coinbase Derivatives, LLC holds a Designated Contract Market license from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, giving the products regulatory standing that distinguishes them from offshore derivatives offerings.

Interactive Brokers is one of the largest electronic brokerage firms globally by daily average revenue trades. Adding regulated cryptocurrency futures extends the platform’s derivatives coverage for clients who already trade equity, bond, and commodity futures through IBKR accounts.

Background

Coinbase Derivatives launched its futures exchange in 2021 as the parent company sought to build a regulated U.S. derivatives business alongside its spot trading operations.

The CFTC-registered venue offers futures on Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH), among other assets. Institutional distribution partnerships with established brokers like Interactive Brokers are a core part of the exchange’s growth strategy.

The May 6 announcement also included a broader product update covering Korean equities access for IBKR clients, which the firm bundled into the same press release.

What to Watch

The expansion reflects a broader effort by regulated cryptocurrency futures venues to grow retail and institutional reach through established broker distribution. For Interactive Brokers clients, the partnership reduces friction in accessing crypto derivatives within an already-familiar interface.

The key variable is whether Coinbase Derivatives can grow open interest and volume through these distribution deals to challenge CME Group’s dominant position in regulated U.S. crypto futures.
