Iran Sends Response to U.S. Peace Proposal as Hormuz Tanker Passes

CNBC reported Sunday that Iran has transmitted its Iran peace proposal to the United States through mediator Pakistan, as one vessel successfully navigated the blockaded Strait of Hormuz for the first time since the conflict began in late February.

Tehran Submits Response Through Pakistani Mediators

Iranian state television confirmed the response was dispatched to Islamabad for onward delivery to Washington. The proposal centers on a comprehensive halt to hostilities across all active fronts, with particular emphasis on Lebanon and the security of commercial shipping routes. A Pakistani government official with direct knowledge of the process confirmed Islamabad received the document and forwarded it promptly.

Despite Tehran’s announcement, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Michael Waltz said Washington had not yet received the response as of Sunday. Speaking to ABC’s “This Week,” Waltz pointed to leadership instability within Iran as a major complicating factor. He noted that Mojtaba Khamenei, son of the former Supreme Leader, has been severely wounded and remains largely unreachable. He added the IRGC still defers to Khamenei to some degree, slowing the process considerably.

First LNG Vessel Transits the Strait

A QatarEnergy-operated liquefied natural gas carrier, the Al Kharaitiyat, became the first Qatari LNG vessel to cross the Strait of Hormuz since hostilities erupted. The tanker, bound for Pakistan’s Port Qasim, was tracked by shipping analytics firm Kpler. Tehran is said to have approved the transit as a goodwill gesture toward Qatar and Pakistan, both of whom are active mediators in the ongoing diplomatic process. Pakistan had been suffering a wave of power blackouts following the halt of gas imports.

Background: Hormuz as a Global Pressure Point

Before the war began on February 28, the Strait of Hormuz carried roughly one-fifth of global oil supply. Iran’s near-total blockade of non-Iranian commercial shipping has triggered an acute energy crisis worldwide. A month-old ceasefire has remained fragile, with sporadic drone incidents continuing across the Gulf region.

Drone Attacks Cloud Diplomatic Progress

Progress on the Iran peace proposal was shadowed Sunday by fresh security incidents. The United Arab Emirates reported intercepting two Iranian drones. Qatar condemned a separate drone strike on a cargo vessel in its waters. Kuwait activated air defenses after hostile drones entered its airspace. A Panama-flagged bulk carrier also successfully transited the strait using a route designated by Iranian armed forces. President Donald Trump faces mounting urgency to conclude a deal before his scheduled visit to China later this week, as the conflict continues to weigh heavily on the global economy.
