Maersk Ship Transits Hormuz Under U.S. Navy Cover

CNBC reported Tuesday that a Maersk-operated vessel completed a safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz under active U.S. military protection. The crossing marks the first confirmed transit for the Danish shipping giant since the waterway was effectively shut down by the U.S.-Israeli war against Iran, which began in late February.

A Vessel Finally Gets Through

The ship involved was the Alliance Fairfax, a U.S.-flagged vessel managed by Farrell Lines, a subsidiary of Maersk Line Limited. It completed the passage on Monday with its entire crew reported safe. The vessel had been stranded at sea for more than two months, unable to move as hostilities sealed off one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints.

U.S. Central Command confirmed via social media that two American-flagged commercial ships had crossed the strait that day. Guided-missile destroyers are currently stationed in the region to provide cover for merchant traffic.

What Is Project Freedom

President Donald Trump unveiled what his administration has branded “Project Freedom,” a U.S. Navy-led effort to escort commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz. The strait is a narrow corridor linking the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. Under normal conditions, roughly 20% of the world’s oil and gas supply passes through it. That traffic has virtually halted since the conflict erupted.

Trump, speaking on Fox News Monday, issued a stark warning that Iran risked total destruction if it targeted ships operating under American protection.

Fragile Ceasefire Strains Under Fresh Attacks

The backdrop to the Maersk transit remains deeply unstable. Iranian drones and missiles struck the United Arab Emirates on Tuesday, while Washington said its forces had sunk Iranian boats in the strait. A ceasefire that had appeared fragile is now looking closer to collapse.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi pushed back against the U.S. initiative, saying via social media that the strait’s situation demonstrated no military path exists for resolving what he called a political crisis. He described Project Freedom as “Project Deadlock” and urged Washington to avoid being drawn into further escalation.

Pakistan has been cited as a mediator, with talks described as ongoing.

Market Watch Ahead of Earnings

Maersk is widely followed as a proxy for global trade health. The company is scheduled to release its first-quarter earnings this Thursday, and analysts will be watching closely for any revised guidance tied to the ongoing disruption across Persian Gulf shipping routes. Oil prices have already moved in response to the renewed tensions.
