NEAR Climbs as AI Blockchain Narrative Pulls Fresh Capital
NEAR Protocol (NEAR) is back in the CoinGecko trending list as of May 31, as the AI blockchain narrative pulls fresh buying interest into the layer-1 network. The token trades near $2.25, down roughly 5.6% over the past 24 hours against the dollar, but its appearance in the top-10 trending list signals active search and wallet activity outpacing that pullback.
The move comes as broader AI-adjacent cryptocurrency tokens show split performance, with some posting double-digit gains while older AI-narrative chains lag the pack.
NEAR and the AI Blockchain Trade
NEAR Protocol is an open-source layer-1 blockchain, a base-level network that runs smart contracts and decentralized applications without relying on another chain beneath it. The network launched its mainnet in April 2020 and is built around a sharding architecture called Nightshade.
Sharding splits blockchain data into smaller chunks processed in parallel, which allows NEAR to handle more transactions per second than most non-sharded chains. The protocol has positioned itself as an AI-friendly infrastructure layer, hosting projects that connect on-chain compute with AI model execution.
The AI narrative is driving real capital rotation across the sector.
The Artificial Superintelligence Alliance (FET) posted a 15.7% gain in the 24 hours to May 31. OpenServ (SERV), an agent-coordination protocol, gained 11.8% over the same period. Both tokens represent a new category of AI-native cryptocurrency projects competing for the same pool of speculative capital that once flowed more evenly across major layer-1 chains.
NEAR’s appearance on trending lists suggests it is drawing comparison-shopping from traders evaluating AI blockchain exposure.

What the Volume Data Shows
NEAR’s 24-hour trading volume sits in the mid-range for top-40 assets. The token’s market cap ranks 37th globally, placing it among established mid-cap chains that retain deep liquidity.
The price pullback on May 31 tracks a broader rotation out of last week’s outperformers. Stellar (XLM), for example, dropped 16.8% over the same window after surging more than 14% earlier in the week. Chains that ran hard in the prior session are seeing profit-taking while fresh momentum searches for the next entry.
NEAR’s resilience relative to some peers is partly structural.
The network’s developer tooling includes a JavaScript-compatible smart contract environment, which lowers onboarding friction for traditional web developers. That has historically translated into a broader base of active projects relative to chains with steeper learning curves.

Background
NEAR had its most significant market cycle peak in early 2022, when the token briefly traded above $20 during the peak AI and metaverse speculative cycle.
The subsequent bear market brought it below $1.50 by late 2022. The token recovered into the $8 range during the early 2024 bull cycle before settling into a multi-month consolidation band through 2025.
The current $2.25 handle represents a significant discount to those cycle highs, which is part of the value framing traders use when comparing it to newer AI-native tokens that carry no equivalent track record or liquidity depth.
The broader context matters. Spot Bitcoin (BTC) ETFs recorded net outflows exceeding $4 billion over a three-week stretch through late May 2026, according to recent flow data.
That rotation out of the most liquid cryptocurrency wrapper created pressure across the board, but it also freed capital to seek higher-beta opportunities in mid-cap AI-narrative tokens. NEAR sits at the intersection of established liquidity and the AI sector pitch, which is the combination attracting fresh attention on trading desks this week.

What to Watch
The key level for NEAR in the near term is whether it can hold above $2.10, which has served as a support band across several sessions in May 2026.
A break below that level on meaningful volume would suggest the trending signal is noise rather than a genuine accumulation setup. On the upside, a reclaim of $2.50 with sustained volume would give traders a higher-confidence read on whether the AI-blockchain rotation is finding a durable bid in the protocol.
The OpenServ and FET gains in this same window are the benchmarks NEAR is implicitly competing against.
If those tokens continue to outperform, capital may stay concentrated in smaller-cap pure-play AI tokens rather than rotating into established layer-1 chains that carry the AI label more loosely. The May 31 trending placement is a data point, not a confirmation.
Traders watching this trade should track whether the trending status persists into the next 12-hour window.
