Pope Leo Arrives in Spain
CNBC reported Saturday that Pope Leo has touched down in Madrid, kicking off a seven-day tour of Spain that places migration and societal division squarely at its heart.
Pope Leo Spain Visit Opens in Madrid
The pontiff, the first American to lead the Catholic Church, is in Spain from June 6 through 12. The itinerary covers Madrid, the Montserrat Monastery in Catalonia, Barcelona, and the Canary Islands off Africa’s northwestern coast. Aboard the flight from Rome, Leo told reporters the trip was an opportunity to model genuine respect for human life. He framed the journey as a chance to deliver “a very good message of charity and respect for every human being.”
Upon arrival, Leo met with Spanish King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia before addressing a gathering of diplomats and civic leaders. Saturday evening’s programme included a meeting with young people near the Santiago BernabĂ©u Stadium and a stop at a Catholic charity serving homeless residents of the capital.
Background on Migration and the Canary Islands Crisis
The Canary Islands leg carries particular symbolic weight. The Spanish archipelago sits less than 100 kilometres from the African coast and has become a primary entry point for migrants crossing the Atlantic in small, often overcrowded vessels. Human-rights organisation Caminando Fronteras documented more than 3,000 deaths on that route in 2025 alone. Leo is expected to meet survivors and aid workers on Tenerife, where many arrivals come from French-speaking West African nations. Vatican press director Matteo Bruni underscored the pope’s personal connection to the issue, noting that the stories of people making that crossing “must touch us.”
Spain’s Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has launched a wide amnesty scheme allowing an estimated 500,000 undocumented immigrants to seek legal status, a stance that stands in stark contrast to the restrictive policies pursued by the United States under President Donald Trump. Leo has previously drawn Trump’s ire by publicly criticising Washington’s immigration posture.
Speeches, Parliament, and the Sagrada Familia
Leo is scheduled to deliver more than 20 addresses during the visit, including a landmark speech to the Spanish parliament, the first by any pope. He will also consecrate a newly completed tower at Antoni GaudĂ’s Sagrada Familia basilica in Barcelona. Having served as a missionary and bishop in Peru for decades before his election last May, Leo will conduct most engagements in Spanish, switching to French when greeting migrants on Tenerife.
Vatican officials say the overarching theme will be a call to step back from armed conflict and to resist the political polarisation fragmenting societies across Europe and beyond.
