Putin Signals Ukraine War Is Nearing Its End

Russian President Vladimir Putin told reporters Saturday that the Ukraine war was approaching its conclusion, CNBC reported. His remarks came directly after Russia’s Victory Day ceremonies at the Kremlin. The comments mark one of his most explicit public statements on the war’s trajectory.

Putin Speaks After a Subdued Victory Day

Putin delivered his remarks following what observers described as Russia’s most restrained Victory Day parade in recent memory. The annual May 9 holiday commemorates the Soviet Union’s defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II. It honours the roughly 27 million Soviet citizens who lost their lives in that conflict. This year’s scaled-back ceremony drew immediate international attention given the timing of his comments.

Four Years of War With No Clear Resolution

The conflict Russia launched in February 2022 has become the deadliest European war since World War II. Hundreds of thousands of lives have been lost. Large parts of Ukraine lie in ruin. Russian forces have struggled to seize the full Donbas region in eastern Ukraine despite sustained pressure. Kyiv’s forces have held a string of fortified positions along the front line. The war has also placed severe strain on Russia’s roughly $3 trillion economy and severed ties with Europe to a degree unseen since the Cold War.

Diplomacy and the Schroeder Factor

On the question of European engagement, Putin indicated he would prefer to deal with former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder as an interlocutor. The Kremlin has previously insisted that European governments must initiate contact, since it was they who cut ties with Moscow in 2022. EU leaders were separately reported to be preparing for potential dialogue. Putin also addressed the possibility of a face-to-face meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, saying such an encounter could only take place after a durable peace agreement was already in place.

What Comes Next

Whether Putin’s public optimism reflects genuine diplomatic momentum or strategic posturing remains unclear. No formal ceasefire framework has been announced. Western governments have not yet publicly responded to his Saturday remarks. Markets that track geopolitical risk in European equities and energy commodities will be watching closely for any follow-up signals from Kyiv or Brussels in the coming days.
