Russian Drone Strikes Romanian Apartment Block, Injuring Two
NBC News reported Friday that a Russian drone struck an apartment building in Galați, Romania, injuring two residents and igniting a rooftop fire. The incident marked a significant escalation, carrying the war in Ukraine directly onto NATO-member soil.
A Drone War Spills Over the Border
Romania’s defense ministry confirmed that radar systems tracked several drones entering Romanian airspace overnight. The country scrambled two F-16 jets and a helicopter to intercept them. One drone evaded the response and struck a ten-story residential building in Galați, a Danube river town bordering Ukraine and Moldova. Two people required medical treatment following the blast and subsequent blaze.
The strike was part of a broader Russian assault that night. Ukrainian authorities said Russia launched 232 drones and one ballistic missile against Ukrainian territory. Ukraine’s air defenses intercepted 217 of those drones, but the remainder reached their targets alongside the missile.
NATO and Europe Issue Sharp Rebukes
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte condemned the incident in forceful terms, saying Russia’s conduct endangered everyone beyond Ukraine’s borders. He reaffirmed the alliance’s commitment to defending every inch of allied territory.
US Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker echoed that position publicly, expressing solidarity with Romania and condemning what he called a reckless incursion. His remarks carried weight given the alliance’s mutual-defense framework under Article 5, which treats an attack on one member as an attack on all.
Romanian Foreign Affairs Minister Oana-Silvia Țoiu described the event as a grave violation of international law and summoned the Russian ambassador to Bucharest in protest. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said Russia’s war had crossed yet another line.
Asked whether President Vladimir Putin knew about the drone entering Romanian territory, Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov offered a sarcastic non-denial to state news agency TASS.
Background: Romania on the Eastern Flank
Romania has long occupied a strategically sensitive position on NATO’s eastern edge. The country borders Ukraine to the north and sits along the Black Sea coast, making it a frontline state as Russia’s assault on Ukraine has intensified. Romania joined NATO in 2004 and upgraded its air-defense capabilities in recent years, acquiring F-16 fighters partly in anticipation of regional threats.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the Galați strike demonstrated why international pressure on Moscow must increase. Ukraine’s foreign minister called it evidence that Russian aggression threatens the entire Black Sea region and continental Europe more broadly.
President Donald Trump has previously questioned the strength of US commitment to NATO’s mutual-defense guarantee, adding uncertainty to how Washington might respond should incidents like Friday’s escalate further.
