Southern England Rail Network Hit by Major Disruption After Radio Fault

BBC Business reported Thursday that a radio communications fault triggered widespread rail disruption across southern England, with National Rail warning passengers of delays lasting through the end of the day.

The fault, which affected communication links between train drivers and signallers, was first flagged at 08:53 BST. National Rail confirmed the issue was resolved by 11:00 BST. Despite the fix, passengers faced onward delays of up to 90 minutes or outright cancellations as the network struggled to recover.

Six operators were caught up in the disruption. South Western Railway, CrossCountry, Southern, Gatwick Express, the London Overground, and Thameslink all reported cancellations and timetable alterations throughout the morning. London Overground later confirmed its services had returned to normal. Great Western Railway said its trains were unaffected by early afternoon.

South Western Railway warned of “significant” continued disruption. Trains faced holds at stations alongside delays and cancellations. The operator advised passengers their tickets would be valid on Friday. Alternatively, travellers could use other rail companies, local buses, or the London Underground at no extra cost on Thursday.

National Rail’s southern network has faced persistent reliability pressures in recent months, with infrastructure faults drawing repeated criticism from both commuters and businesses. Thursday’s disruption highlighted the cascading effect that a single technical fault can have across multiple interconnected operators.

GTR, which operates Southern, Thameslink, and Gatwick Express, apologised for the disruption. The group said services west of Chichester, West Sussex, were most heavily affected. Southern services between London Victoria and the West Coastway route linking Brighton, Portsmouth, and Southampton were particularly disrupted. GTR urged afternoon travellers to check journey details before departing.

The human toll of the disruption was immediate. A 28-year-old tattooist told BBC Business her London Victoria departure was cancelled, cutting into earnings she depends on daily. An 18-year-old student from Portsmouth faced arriving hours late to college just weeks before his A-Level examinations began. A 50-year-old hiker from Basingstoke said delays would likely cause him to miss a connecting ferry to the Isle of Wight.
