Trump Warns Iran Ceasefire Is ‘On Life Support’ After Rejecting Counter Proposal
CNBC reported Monday that President Donald Trump declared the U.S.-Iran ceasefire is “on life support” after dismissing Tehran’s counter proposal as wholly unacceptable. Speaking to reporters inside the Oval Office, Trump described the Iran ceasefire as “unbelievably weak” following Washington’s review of the response.
A Deal in Name Only
Trump used stark medical imagery to describe the truce’s condition. He compared its survival odds to a doctor informing a patient’s family that their loved one had roughly a one percent chance of living. He told reporters he did not even finish reading what he called Tehran’s submission. The stark language signals a sharp deterioration in diplomatic momentum between the two countries.
How the Ceasefire Came to Be
The fragile truce took effect on April 8 after Trump threatened to obliterate Iran’s “whole civilization” unless a deal was reached quickly. The agreement was initially designed to last just two weeks before Trump unilaterally extended it on April 21. From its earliest days, both sides accused the other of violations. A central condition attached to the deal required Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, the critical waterway through which a significant share of the world’s oil supply transits. When shipping traffic through the strait failed to recover, Washington ordered a naval blockade in the Gulf of Oman, cutting off Iranian port access by sea.
Attacks Continue Despite the Truce
The ceasefire has been unable to halt ongoing hostilities across the region. In the week preceding Trump’s remarks alone, Iran launched an attack on the United Arab Emirates. U.S. and Iranian forces also exchanged fire in the strait. The Pentagon separately confirmed it struck two Iran-flagged oil tankers during that same period. Despite the flare-ups, the Trump administration maintained last week that the ceasefire technically remained in force while awaiting Tehran’s formal response.
Tehran’s Reply Triggers Breakdown
Iran’s reply arrived over the weekend. Trump announced on his Truth Social platform Sunday that he had received the counter proposal and found it completely unacceptable, posting his reaction in characteristically blunt terms. Monday’s Oval Office comments went further, signaling the administration may be losing patience with the diplomatic track entirely. Whether Washington will present a revised offer or allow the ceasefire to fully collapse remains unclear. Markets sensitive to Middle Eastern supply disruptions, particularly crude oil, will be watching the next moves closely.
