Trump Warns Iran Ceasefire Is on Life Support After Rejecting Peace Proposal
The BBC reported Monday that US President Donald Trump declared the Iran ceasefire is on “massive life support,” comparing its odds of survival to a patient given a one-percent chance of recovery. Trump made the remarks to reporters gathered in the Oval Office, signalling deep frustration with Tehran’s negotiating posture.
Trump Rejects Iran’s Counter-Proposal Outright
Iran submitted a 14-point counter-proposal to Washington on Sunday outlining its conditions for ending the war. Trump wasted little time in dismissing it, calling the offer “totally unacceptable” and saying he did not even read it in full. Writing on Truth Social, Trump described the document in blunt terms before later telling reporters he viewed Iran’s leadership as “very dishonourable people.” Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei pushed back, characterising Tehran’s proposals as responsible and generous. He added that Iran would act in whatever manner it deemed necessary to protect its national interests.
What Tehran’s Proposal Actually Contains
According to Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency, Tehran’s offer calls for an immediate halt to hostilities across all active fronts. That language pointedly references continued strikes by Israeli forces against Hezbollah in Lebanon. The proposal also demands an end to the US naval blockade of Iranian ports, guaranteed protection from further attacks, and financial compensation for war-related damage. Iran separately asserted sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly 20% of global oil and liquefied natural gas normally flows. The strait has remained blocked since hostilities began, pushing world oil prices sharply higher.

Israeli and US forces launched large-scale air strikes against Iran on 28 February. A ceasefire eventually took effect last month, though both sides have reported occasional exchanges of fire since then. Trump has repeatedly insisted the conflict will end quickly. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, however, set his own condition, stating that Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile must be physically removed before any peace can be declared. Trump also accused Iran of reneging on an earlier agreement to allow the removal of enriched uranium, a claim Iran’s negotiating team flatly denied. Axios separately reported that the original US memorandum sought a suspension of Iranian nuclear enrichment, sanctions relief, and restored access through the strait, with many terms contingent on a final deal.
Markets and Regional Fallout
Iranian parliamentary speaker Mohammad Ghalibaf warned on X that Iran’s armed forces stood ready to respond to any aggression. He added that the longer the US delayed, the greater the cost to American taxpayers. Oil markets have already registered the tension, with prices climbing in response to continued disruption at the Strait of Hormuz.
