Trump Issues Final Iran Deal Demands, Cites Hormuz and Nuclear Conditions
President Donald Trump announced sweeping Iran deal demands Friday and said he was heading to the Situation Room to make a “final determination,” CNBC reported.
Trump posted his conditions on Truth Social, setting out what Iran must accept to end the three-month-old conflict. The statement left markets and analysts uncertain about which terms had already been tentatively agreed upon by negotiators.
Trump’s Core Demands on Iran
Trump’s post stated that Iran must permanently forswear nuclear weapons development. He also demanded that the Strait of Hormuz be opened immediately to unrestricted, toll-free shipping in both directions.
The U.S. naval blockade in the Gulf of Oman would be lifted, Trump wrote, though the sequencing of that step relative to Iran’s compliance remained ambiguous. Trump further stated that no financial transfers would occur until unspecified further notice.
On the nuclear material front, Trump said enriched material buried beneath collapsed mountain terrain from last year’s B-2 bomber strikes would be excavated jointly by the U.S. and Iran. He said the IAEA would participate and the material would be destroyed.
Background: A War Now Three Months Old
The U.S.-Iran conflict erupted roughly three months ago, reshaping oil markets and global shipping routes. The Hormuz Strait, through which a significant share of global crude transits, has faced severe disruption since Iranian threats began blocking transit.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned Oman this week that Washington would aggressively pursue anyone facilitating toll collection at the strait. Trump had previously threatened Oman directly at a Cabinet meeting, remarks that drew sharp international attention.
Iran Responds With Defiance
Iranian officials offered little sign of capitulation before Trump’s post went live. A social media account attributed to parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf suggested Iran views military leverage, not dialogue, as its primary bargaining tool. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi separately voiced solidarity with Oman in the face of American pressure.
Oil Markets React
Oil prices declined after Trump’s Truth Social statement, with traders interpreting the post as a signal that a deal could be within reach. The market reaction underscored how closely energy prices have tracked every development in the standoff since the conflict began.
The outcome of Friday’s Situation Room meeting remained unknown at time of publication. Analysts noted that the gap between Trump’s public demands and Iran’s stated posture leaves significant room for the talks to unravel.
