Trump’s NBA Finals Appearance Triggers Major Security Overhaul at MSG

CNBC reported Sunday that the Trump NBA Finals appearance in New York has prompted sweeping security changes at Madison Square Garden. President Donald Trump confirmed Friday he would attend Game 3, marking the first NBA Finals matchup held in New York since 1999.

Security Measures Reshape the Fan Experience

The New York Knicks issued guidance Saturday asking attendees to bring as little as possible to the arena. A complete bag ban is now in effect for the Monday night tipoff, scheduled just after 8:40 p.m. EDT. Fans are also advised to arrive at least two hours early to clear what the team described as TSA-style entry screening. No storage will be available for prohibited items at the venue.

Outdoor Watch Party Axed Amid Presidential Logistics

The popular outdoor watch party traditionally held on the plaza surrounding MSG will not take place for Game 3. The New York Police Department stated the cancellation was made in coordination with the Secret Service given the presidential visit. Authorities expect the outdoor gatherings to resume for Game 4. Madison Square Garden pushed back on any suggestion the decision was politically motivated, with a spokesperson stating the permit was denied through the city’s standard permitting office in consultation with the NYPD.

A History of Rowdy Crowds Outside the Garden

The watch party issue predates Trump’s visit by several days. Following Friday’s Game 2 victory over the San Antonio Spurs, crowds outside MSG spilled into surrounding streets. More than two dozen arrests were made, including one woman accused of striking a police officer. The city had initially moved to cancel all outdoor gatherings before reversing course and issuing a permit for Game 1 last Wednesday. The recurring disorder has placed the NYPD in a difficult position balancing fan enthusiasm against public safety.

Alternative Events Fill the Gap

Fans shut out of the outdoor plaza are being redirected to two official Knicks-sanctioned events. Wollman Rink in Central Park and Brooklyn Bowl are both hosting watch parties for Game 3. Both venues required advance registration and had already reached capacity by Sunday afternoon. Trump, a self-described lifelong Knicks supporter, has made attending major U.S. sporting events a visible part of his second-term public schedule, having also appeared at the 2025 Super Bowl, the Daytona 500, and the Ryder Cup.
