Trump Announces Three-Day Russia-Ukraine Ceasefire and Prisoner Swap
CBS News reported Friday that President Donald Trump has announced a three-day Russia-Ukraine ceasefire alongside a swap of 1,000 prisoners. The pause in fighting is set to cover Saturday through Monday, coinciding with Russia’s Victory Day commemoration. Trump said he personally requested the halt and credited both Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelenskyy for agreeing to it.
Trump Posts the Announcement on Truth Social
Trump shared the news via his Truth Social platform, framing the ceasefire as a meaningful step forward. He described the conflict as the largest war since World War II and said negotiations toward a permanent resolution were advancing daily. “Hopefully, it is the beginning of the end of a very long, deadly, and hard fought War,” Trump wrote in his post, per CBS News.
Neither Moscow nor Kyiv had independently confirmed the agreement at the time of Trump’s announcement. That uncertainty leaves the durability of the pause unclear heading into the weekend.
A Fragmented Ceasefire Picture
The announcement adds another layer of complexity to an already confusing set of overlapping proposals. Earlier this week, Zelenskyy declared a separate ceasefire covering May 5 and 6. Russia had previously floated its own pause for May 8 and 9. The competing timelines have made it difficult to establish a coherent or jointly acknowledged framework.
Trump’s three-day window appears intended to bridge those gaps, though the lack of confirmed buy-in from either government raises questions about enforceability on the ground.
Background: Four Years of War and Fitful Diplomacy
The Russia-Ukraine conflict entered its fifth year in 2026, having begun with Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022. Tens of thousands of lives have been lost on both sides, and diplomatic efforts have repeatedly stalled. Trump, since returning to the White House, has made ending the war a stated foreign policy priority.
His administration’s latest push included high-level talks between U.S. and Ukrainian officials in Miami earlier this week. A direct phone call between Trump and Putin took place last week, setting the stage for Friday’s announcement.

Markets and Geopolitical Stakes
A confirmed ceasefire, even a temporary one, would carry significant implications for European energy markets and defence sector equities. European natural gas prices have remained elevated amid persistent war risk, and any credible de-escalation signal tends to move commodity benchmarks quickly.
Investors and governments alike will watch closely over the weekend for confirmation from Kyiv and Moscow that the guns have indeed gone quiet.
