Tulsi Gabbard Steps Down as Director of National Intelligence

CNBC reported Friday that Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard is stepping down from her role in the Trump administration, citing a deeply personal reason. Her husband has recently received a diagnosis of an extremely rare form of bone cancer.

Gabbard Cites Family Over Duty

Gabbard submitted a formal resignation letter to President Donald Trump dated Friday, May 22. In it, she said she could not ask her husband, Abraham Williams, to confront a serious illness alone while she remained in such a demanding and consuming government role. Her departure becomes official on June 30. Trump responded publicly via a Truth Social post, acknowledging her exit with regret and praising her record in the position. He described her tenure as exceptional and said she would be missed by the administration.

Acting DNI Named Quickly

Trump’s post also named a successor on an interim basis. Aaron Lukas, the Principal Deputy Director of National Intelligence, will step into the role in an acting capacity once Gabbard’s resignation takes effect. No timeline was given for a permanent appointment. The swift naming of Lukas signals the administration’s intent to maintain continuity at the top of the intelligence structure. The DNI oversees the 17-agency U.S. intelligence community, coordinating analysis and briefings for the president and national security officials.

Background on Gabbard’s Tenure

Gabbard was a controversial pick when Trump nominated her for the DNI role. A former Democratic congresswoman from Hawaii, she drew scrutiny during Senate confirmation hearings over her past foreign policy positions and limited intelligence experience. She was nonetheless confirmed and took office in early 2025. Her tenure saw her navigate several high-profile national security episodes, often defending the administration’s intelligence posture publicly. The DNI role was created after the September 11 Commission recommended a single coordinating authority above the CIA, NSA, and other agencies.

What Comes Next

Lukas is a career intelligence professional, and his elevation to acting director is expected to provide stability in the near term. Whether Trump moves to nominate a permanent replacement quickly remains to be seen. Personnel moves at the DNI level can take months to work through Senate confirmation. For now, Gabbard’s departure marks another significant reshuffling within an administration that has seen considerable turnover across key national security and cabinet positions.
