Ethereum co-creator Vitalik Buterin said on May 11, that zero-knowledge payment systems could become the default standard for cryptocurrency transactions in the AI-driven “agentic era.” Buterin’s remarks, circulated widely on social media, argue that as AI agents increasingly execute financial transactions autonomously, the privacy and verifiability properties of ZK-based payments become essential rather than optional. The statement positions ZK payments as infrastructure for a machine-to-machine economy, not just a user-privacy feature.
