AOL.com reported Friday that Walmart has emerged as the most trusted grocery store in the United States, according to newly released BrandSpark survey data spanning multiple regions and shopping categories.

The survey found Walmart leading across a remarkable range of metrics. The retail giant claimed the top spot for customer service nationally, narrowly outperforming Kroger. It also ranked first for store-brand and private-label product quality. Those categories have grown in importance as consumers actively seek budget-friendly alternatives without compromising on quality.

Affordability was another pillar of Walmart’s sweep. The chain ranked first for low prices in both the South and the West. It also tied for the top discount supermarket position in the West alongside Grocery Outlet.

Perhaps most strikingly, Walmart led the rankings for grocery pickup and delivery, outperforming dedicated services including Instacart. The retailer even shared second place in the natural and organic foods category alongside Sprouts Farmers Market and Trader Joe’s.

How Regional Rivals Stacked Up

Walmart’s dominance was not universal. German discount chain Aldi proved a formidable force in the Midwest and Northeast. Aldi claimed the top spot for small-format grocery stores across the Midwest, Northeast and South. It also placed as a runner-up for affordability in the South, cementing its reputation among budget-conscious households.

Kroger captured the loyalty program category outright through its Kroger Rewards scheme, edging out Walmart’s competing rewards offering. Kroger also served as runner-up in both customer service and store-brand product quality. Whole Foods Market retained its crown as the preferred destination for natural and organic shoppers. Trader Joe’s performed strongly in the small-format segment, while ShopRite and Safeway maintained firm regional followings.

Background: Grocery Trust as a Shifting Battleground

The grocery sector has faced significant pressure in recent years. Persistent food inflation pushed consumers toward value-oriented formats and private-label alternatives. Retailers that invested in loyalty infrastructure and last-mile delivery capabilities gained measurable advantages. BrandSpark’s survey methodology breaks results down by region and store format. That granularity reveals how trust is earned differently depending on geography and shopper priorities.

No single retailer captured every category outright. The data suggests shoppers should match store choice to specific needs. Budget-focused trips in the Midwest and Northeast favor Aldi. Loyalty point maximizers and those prioritising service lean toward Kroger. Organic-focused households still gravitate to Whole Foods. For a single all-purpose destination combining delivery, affordability and private-label trust, however, the survey points firmly toward Walmart as the national benchmark.
