The Rise of YouTube Strategists Behind the Platform’s Biggest Channels
CNBC reported Sunday that a fast-growing tier of YouTube strategists is commanding serious fees from creators who want sustained audience growth on the platform.
A New Kind of Media Advisor
Consultants like Paddy Galloway have built practices around dissecting creator performance data. Galloway charges clients north of $15,000 per month for his services. His client list includes some of the platform’s biggest names. Jimmy Donaldson, globally recognised as MrBeast, is among them. So is sports creator Jesse Riedel, known online as Jesser.
The advice is granular. When wildlife presenter Forrest Galante met with Galloway recently, the strategist flagged a pattern. Turtle footage in Galante’s videos was consistently driving viewers away. Galloway said engagement dropped noticeably across multiple videos featuring the animals. Galante has 2.5 million subscribers and over a decade of wildlife programming experience. He still needed the outside perspective.
Jesser credited Galloway directly with transforming his channel. His subscriber count grew from roughly 3 million to more than 41 million.
YouTube’s Expanding Media Footprint
The rise of these advisors reflects YouTube’s growing dominance in the broader media landscape. CNBC cited Nielsen data showing YouTube accounts for 12.7% of all U.S. streaming time. Netflix sits second at 8.4%, with Disney following at 5%.
A 2025 Goldman Sachs report estimated 67 million people globally now identify as online content creators. That figure could surpass 100 million by 2030. Around 10,000 U.S.-based YouTube channels have crossed the 1 million subscriber threshold, according to YouTube.
Since 2021, YouTube has distributed more than $100 billion to creators. An increasing portion of that is tied to content consumed on connected TVs rather than mobile screens.
Why Creators Are Paying for Strategy
The platform’s algorithm changes frequently, and longer formats now dominate. Videos exceeding 30 minutes are increasingly favoured as YouTube competes with subscription streaming services on the living room screen. That shift demands higher production investment and more strategic planning.
YouTube growth strategist Aniket Mishra told CNBC that consultants become essential at a certain scale. Reaching 1 million subscribers may not require one, but pushing beyond that into tens of millions almost certainly does.
YouTube will host its annual Brandcast advertiser presentation in New York this Wednesday. The event has grown in prominence each year as the platform’s share of viewer attention rises. It serves as a reminder that creator-driven content is no longer a sideshow. It is the main event for a growing share of global audiences.
