His street-level food tour went viral on Chinese social media while he accompanied President Donald Trump to one of the most closely watched diplomatic gatherings in recent memory.
Huang Hits the Streets of Historic Beijing
Huang was spotted by local press at No. 69 Fangzhuanchang Noodles, a Michelin Bib Gourmand-recognised restaurant in central Beijing. He sampled zhajiangmian, a regional specialty of thick noodles topped with soybean paste, vegetables, and meat. His on-camera verdict was enthusiastic and simple. “It’s so good,” he said, eating outside the entrance as a crowd filmed him.
Not every local staple earned his approval. Huang visibly winced while trying douzhi’er, a fermented soybean drink with a gray-green hue and sharply sour taste. The moment was captured on video and quickly trended on Weibo, China’s dominant social platform, by Friday afternoon. He was seen shortly after purchasing a sweet drink from popular chain Mixue Bingcheng.
A Last-Minute Invitation to Air Force One
Huang’s presence on the trip was not originally confirmed. AOL.com reported that Trump personally called him on Tuesday morning to extend an invitation, citing a person familiar with the exchange. Huang boarded Air Force One that evening.
Speaking to reporters at the summit, Huang framed the moment in broad terms. He described it as an opportunity to represent the United States and called the meeting between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping one of the most important summits in recent history. He added that the two leaders’ relationship created a foundation for a stronger bilateral partnership.
