Swatch Shuts UK Stores After Royal Pop Watch Launch Sparks Safety Fears
Swiss watchmaker Swatch shuttered branches across the United Kingdom on Saturday, BBC Business reported, after crowds gathered in dangerous numbers to acquire its newly launched Royal Pop pocket watch collection.
Stores Closed From London to Glasgow
Locations in London, Birmingham, Cardiff, Glasgow, Liverpool, Manchester and Sheffield were all kept shut. The company cited the safety of shoppers and employees as the reason. One man was arrested in Cardiff after roughly 300 people attempted to force entry into a shopping centre at dawn. Merseyside Police also responded to reports of aggressive behaviour outside the Liverpool store before dispersing the crowd.
Swatch publicly urged consumers to stop descending on its branches in large groups. The company also noted that queues exceeding 50 people would trigger sales suspensions in certain markets.
A £335 Watch Now Fetching £16,000 Online
The Royal Pop collection is a joint venture between Swatch and prestigious Geneva manufacturer Audemars Piguet. Entry-level models carry a retail price of £335, placing them within reach of enthusiasts who might otherwise be priced out of the luxury segment. That positioning has fuelled resale demand, with some units already listed online for up to £16,000 — roughly 48 times the retail price.
The watches draw inspiration from the Pop Art movement of the 1950s and 1960s. Both brands have described the collaboration as a collision between playful disruption and traditional Swiss craftsmanship.
A Pattern Playing Out Globally
The frenzy was not confined to Britain. In New York, dedicated buyers reportedly camped outside a Swatch store for an entire week, with some requiring medical attention during the wait. The brand also cancelled a launch event at Dubai Mall after attendance surpassed manageable levels. Queues accumulated outside Swatch’s own Swiss headquarters in Biel and outside its Tokyo location as well.
Swatch’s History of Generating Hype
Swatch built its original reputation on affordable, brightly coloured watches that became cultural icons during the 1980s. The brand has periodically tapped into collector mania since then, most notably through its 2023 MoonSwatch collaboration with Omega, which also produced disorderly launch-day scenes in cities worldwide. The Royal Pop drop appears to have surpassed even that episode in intensity. The company stated the collection would remain on sale for several months, effectively asking the public to exercise patience rather than rush physical locations.
